The Assumption of the Virgin Mary

Is not a day of mourning for her loss, but a celebration of joy for the union of the mother with her beloved son, the blossoming of nature, the flood of emotions, and the return of people to their native land.

The 15th of August is one of the most important celebration of Orthodoxy. All the family's will get together to eat and drink and celebrate.

In every city and village of Cyprus customs and old traditions revive on August 15th.

One of the most well known tradition for this day is as we call it the Panigyri!!!

All the churches around Cyprus that are dedicated to Virgin Mary will have Panigyri the night of the August 15th.

People will go to the church to light a candle and then they will attend the celebrations  where usually are live music bands, dancers, food and drinks, and there is always set up a small outdoor  market where people are selling gifts, accessories, clothes , toys and the traditional loukoumades with honey or hot chocolate.

In Paphos you will get the chance to attent our traditional Panigyri on Thursday the 15th of AUgust around our churches and monasteries .Don't miss the opportunity to experience one of our biggest festivals and celebrations!

We look forward to welcoming you!!!!
