The Event of the Year-Cosi Fan Tutte Opera in Paphos

                                                  Paphos Aphrodite Festival 2014

Paphos is well known about it's history and culture. Is listed in the Unesco's World heritage list and it's famous about the monuments and site around the city. One of the most important monuments is the Medival Castle of Paphos that nowadays is the landmark of the region and the heart of the culture of Paphos.

On the square just in front of the castle a lot of cultural events take place, the most distinguished of which is the “Pafos Aphrodite Festival” which is held every year in the beginning of September and hosts opera productions by acknowledged opera theatres from abroad. The building of the castle acts as part of the sets as the whole square is transformed into a big open-air stage attracting thousands of opera lovers to attend this enchanting Festival.

Paphos Aphrodite Festival 2014 opens its curtain and presents the popular, witty opera Cosi Fan Tutte (So do all Women) by the great composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart on 5, 6 and 7 September at the Medieval Castle in Pafos in co-production with the lyric organization Opera Futura from Verona and the participation of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.

W.A. Mozart’s masterpiece So do all Women or The school for Lovers (Così fan tutte, ossia La scuola degli amanti) represents the genre of the Italian opera buffa and consists of two acts. The libretto was written by Lorenzo Da Ponte and it premiered at the Burg theater in Vienna on 26 January 1790. The subject matter of this comic opera was considered rather bold for its time since it told a story of exchanging lovers. Even though the premiere was a great success and the audiences’ response was enthusiastic, for the next half of the century it was rarely performed, and when it did appear it was presented in one of several bowdlerised versions.

The plot continues to enchant audiences even today since it grapples with the timeless issues of love and unfaithfulness, reason and emotion, which co-exist in a comic story where deception entwines with the truth and the facade co-exists with the face. The pure beauty, the perfection and depth of the music, characteristics of Mozart’s genius, will charm and pleasantly surprise the music loving audience.

If you love Opera don't miss the opportunity to enjoy an amazing play in the scenery
of one of the Unesco's World Heritage monument...
