Traditions in Cyprus during Easter

Easter is a celebration of new life; in Greek it is known as Lampbri which means to shine. Easter is the most sacred observance in the Greek Orthodox faith. Preparations and customs remain some of the most traditional in modern Greek life.

Preparations for Easter come to a climax toward the end of Holy Week, between Palm Sunday and Easter. While there are many local customs associated with Easter, there are several observed by all.
We will be teaching you some of our Greek and Cypriot Easter traditions from today until Sunday!
The relationship between food and Easter is a very significant one.  Flaounes is one of the most famous and most important savoury pastries at Easter. They are cheese buns with a rich filling of eggs, halloumi and Flaouna cheese. Some people add raisins, red wine and fresh or dried mint too.
Flaounes are lovingly prepared by diligent housewives using recipes handed down by their mothers and grandmothers. Many women take great pride in a well baked flaouna and often make large quantities so they can share them with family and friends.

Here at Aliathon Holiday Village in Paphos Cyprus  we have been teaching our guests how to make flaounes and it has been a huge success so far!
