Holy Wednesday

Easter is the greatest holiday in the Orthodox Church. The Holy Week that ends on the Saturday of the resurrection of Jesus is a set of customs and traditions with a lot of feasts, rituals, cooking, dancing and singing.

Today is the Palm Sunday (Kyriaki twn Vaiwn as it is called)
where people are going to the Church holding olive or palm leaves.

According to the tradition the leaves have to stay in the Church until the  day of the Ascension in ordered to be blessed.

After the Ascension feast people will take them back to their home put them in a small sachet and they will keep them for the rest of the year in their icon stands.

A custom that is also common for Palm Sunday is for children to make crosses from olive or palm leaves and hung them in the front doors of their home or in their lapel.

This custom days back to the  triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, where people greeted him holding olive tree branches and palm.
