Holy Satrday!!!! Christos Anesti

Easter Saturday commemorates the day that Jesus Christ’s body laid in the tomb.

As the Saturday evening approaches, people congregate in the church, carrying unlit candles. At midnight, the priest announces the Resurrection of Lord Jesus Christ ("Christos anesti") and lets the people illuminate their candles of the Holy Flame, taken from Christ's nativity cave in Jerusalem. After the rituals are over, the priest blesses the food carried by people to the church, which are served on Easter Sunday. After the late-night resurrection service of the Greek Orthodox Church, resurrection soup 'mageritsa' is served to the congregation. On Easter Sunday, spit-roast lamb is the centerpiece of the table. In the early morning, the spits will be turning in the courtyards and as the lamb, "kokoretsi" is slowly cooked, and the aroma of the roasting lamb whets the appetite of the hungry souls. Christopsomon, a round, flat loaf marked with a cross and decorated with red Easter eggs, is another Greek Easter delicacy.

Great Friday- The holiest day

The holiest day of Holy Week is Holy Friday. It is the day of Jesus’ Crucifixion.

It is a day of mourning, not of work (including cooking). It is also the only day during the year when the Divine Liturgy is not read. Flags are hung at half-mast and church bells ring all day in a slow mournful tone.

Many devout do not cook on Holy Friday, but if they do, traditional foods are simple, perhaps boiled in water (no oil) and seasoned with vinegar - like beans - or thin soups liketahinosoupa, a soup made with tahini.
Traditionally, women and children take flowers to the church to decorate the Epitaphio (the symbolic bier of Christ). The Service of Lamentation mourns the death of Christ and the bier, decorated lavishly with flowers and bearing the image of Christ, is carried on the shoulders of the faithful in a procession through the community to the cemetery, and back. Members of the congregation follow, carrying candles.

Holy Thursday

Thursday before Easter (Big or Holy Thursday) most women do their Easter baking. Eggs are dyed as well. Traditionally they are died red in memory of the blood of Christ shed at His crucifixion.

For Christians the egg is a symbol of Jesus' resurrection, as when they are cracked open they stand for the empty tomb. Eggs were always thought to be special because although they do not seem alive, they have life within them especially at springtime when chicks hatch out.

Another tradition today is the making of the traditional Easter bread known as tsoureki.

Holy Thursday evening, church services include a symbolic representation of the crucifixion, and the period of mourning begins. In many villages - and in cities as well - women will sit in church throughout the night, in traditional mourning.

Here at Aliathon Holiday Village we are dying our eggs today!!!!

Traditions in Cyprus during Easter

Easter is a celebration of new life; in Greek it is known as Lampbri which means to shine. Easter is the most sacred observance in the Greek Orthodox faith. Preparations and customs remain some of the most traditional in modern Greek life.

Preparations for Easter come to a climax toward the end of Holy Week, between Palm Sunday and Easter. While there are many local customs associated with Easter, there are several observed by all.
We will be teaching you some of our Greek and Cypriot Easter traditions from today until Sunday!
The relationship between food and Easter is a very significant one.  Flaounes is one of the most famous and most important savoury pastries at Easter. They are cheese buns with a rich filling of eggs, halloumi and Flaouna cheese. Some people add raisins, red wine and fresh or dried mint too.
Flaounes are lovingly prepared by diligent housewives using recipes handed down by their mothers and grandmothers. Many women take great pride in a well baked flaouna and often make large quantities so they can share them with family and friends.

Here at Aliathon Holiday Village in Paphos Cyprus  we have been teaching our guests how to make flaounes and it has been a huge success so far!
